LCWFC Vs Derby County – Preview

Leicester City Women welcome Derby County Ladies to Farley Way Stadium this evening.

These two Midlands rivals lock horns in the Women’s Premier League North just 22 days after their last encounter.

The sides could not be separated in the reverse fixture as they played out a 1-1 draw at Mickleover Sports.

Three points on the agenda for City:

A hectic schedule in the women’s football calendar has meant that Jonathan Morgan’s team has hardly had time to reflect on the aforementioned draw.

Three matches have taken place since Sophie Domingo’s late equaliser in Derbyshire and Leicester are now unbeaten in five games.

A 0-0 draw with Fylde Ladies was sandwiched between a cup win over New Saints LFC and a hard-fought victory over Huddersfield Ladies in their last outing.

City, who led through Nat Johnson, came back from a goal down on home soil to secure three points against Huddersfield.

The Foxes will be hoping to continue such a rich vein of form under the lights against neighbours Derby.

The hosts have a decent record against the Ewe Rams in all competitions and have not tasted defeat against tonight’s opposition since 2013.

Derby County Ladies:

John Bennett’s side have proven difficult opponents for the majority of WPL sides this term and showcased their credentials against Leicester last month.

Derby sit in sixth position with just one win in their previous six outings with last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Bradford coming 5 league games after their opening day win against Stoke City.

The Ewe Rams’ inability to turn draws – of which they have three in their last four – into wins has proved costly thus far with fans seemingly cursing the loss of last season’s top goalscorer Melissa Johnson in the summer.

A trip to Leicester – where they have struggled to pick up points in recent years – provides another stern test.

One’s To Watch:

Nat Johnson – Nat Johnson has been inspired form of late. Johnson has scored five goals in her last five games across all competitions with the midfielder vital to Leicester’s recent win over Huddersfield. Johnson’s exploits in front of goal has already seen her surpass last season’s personal tally (3).

Andi Bell – With a goal in the reverse fixture, Jonathan Morgan and co. will be well aware of the threat Andi Bell will impose tonight. The experienced striker joined Derby this summer after scoring over 100 goals for Nottingham Forest Ladies. Bell is the club’s top scorer in all competitions with four and she’ll be hoping to add to her impressive goal record this evening.

Team News:

Jonathan Morgan – “The games are starting to come thick and fast already, but we’ve shown that we have the fitness to test teams right up until the final whistle, including a late equaliser away to Derby. We’re fortunate to have no fixture on Sunday, so we can go all out for the win tonight.”

John Bennett – “If we make the same silly mistakes [vs West Brom], we will get absolutely punished for fun against Leicester. We got away with it [vs West Brom] but if a team like Leicester ask questions and we don’t respond, we will get punished. We leave the West Brom game behind, get ready for Wednesday and hope to respond.”
